Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Damper Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install HeatShield-compatible damper repair parts across Los Angeles, with most damper replacements running $340 – $680 installed depending on your throat size and whether the frame is salvageable. Most jobs are done in a single visit because we carry the common HeatShield damper sizes on the truck. What usually brings homeowners to this page is a damper that won’t close all the way, a handle that spins without catching, or a metal-on-metal grind coming from the throat every time they open the fireplace.
Here’s the situation in plain terms: the damper is the iron plate that seals your chimney when the fireplace isn’t burning. HeatShield makes a specific style of top-sealing damper and throat damper that integrates with their resurfacing system. When the part fails, you’re losing conditioned air up the flue year-round and pulling smoke back into the room when you burn. Ruben Castellano has been fixing these across Los Angeles since 2002, and we’ll tell you what you’re seeing and what it actually means before you spend a dollar.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield’s damper hardware tends to fall into two buckets: the top-sealing damper that mounts at the chimney crown and the cast-iron throat damper that sits just above the firebox. Within those, there are standard rectangular sizes, most commonly 8×12, 12×12, and 13×13, though older Los Angeles fireplaces often have non-standard throat dimensions that require a custom-fit frame.
The quickest way to identify what you have: look for the manufacturer’s stamped plate on the damper frame itself. If it’s gone or corroded, measure the throat opening from inside the firebox, not the flue tile above it. We see a lot of homeowners order parts online using the flue tile measurement, and it’s wrong about a third of the time. HeatShield dampers are designed to mate with their ceramic coating system, so if you’ve had a HeatShield resurfacing done, you want the matching damper hardware rather than a generic hardware-store replacement. We also work with DuraFlex and Gelco systems, but for a HeatShield chimney, matching the part matters more than saving fifteen bucks on a knock-off.
Signs Your HeatShield Damper Repair Is Failing
- The handle spins without resistance. This usually means the worm gear or linkage that connects the handle to the damper plate has stripped. That’s the most common failure point on HeatShield throat dampers we see in Los Angeles, especially in homes near the coast where salt air accelerates metal fatigue.
- The damper won’t stay fully closed. Warped plate edges or a weakened tension spring let the damper sag open a quarter inch. That gap is enough to drain warm air from your living room in winter and pull in outside air all summer.
- You hear a grinding or scraping sound when opening or closing. The plate has shifted on its hinge pins, or creosote has built up on the track. Grinding means metal-on-metal contact that will only get worse.
- Smoke rolls back into the room even with the damper fully open. This can mean the damper isn’t opening fully due to a bent linkage, or that the HeatShield coating around the throat has delaminated and narrowed the pass-through.
- Visible rust or flaking on the damper plate. HeatShield dampers are built to resist corrosion, but older units in Los Angeles homes with decades of exposure to acidic combustion byproducts will eventually show it. Once the plate starts flaking, the seal is compromised.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, a HeatShield damper repair or replacement typically runs $340 – $680 installed. The spread comes down to three things: whether it’s a standard size or custom, whether the frame can be reused or needs to be rebuilt, and whether we’re also addressing the HeatShield coating around the throat while we’re in there.
Every job includes the part, the labor, and disposal of the old hardware, all delivered as a written price before we start. Nothing gets added at the end. If we open up the throat and find the frame is cracked or the coating needs touch-up, we’ll show you photos from the camera inspection and give you a separate number for that work before proceeding. Every damper repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within the year, the second visit is free. That’s not an upsell. It’s just how we’ve worked since 2002.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: confirm the handle isn’t just loose on its shaft, look for visible rust or warping on the plate edges, and note whether the damper opens and closes smoothly or catches at a specific point. That’s useful information to have when you call us.
What you shouldn’t do is attempt to remove or replace a throat damper yourself. The damper plate sits inside the hottest, most creosote-loaded part of the chimney, and reaching it requires working at an awkward angle inside the firebox with metal edges and fifty pounds of iron plate. We’ve repaired more than a few DIY attempts where a homeowner dropped the plate onto the firebrick or stripped the mounting bolts. If you’re seeing any of the symptoms above, call us at (336) 863-3889 and we’ll schedule a technician to assess it in person.
FAQs
A properly installed HeatShield damper should last 15 to 25 years in Los Angeles, but coastal salt air and heavy use can shorten that. The linkage and spring typically fail before the plate itself.
Sometimes. If the plate is intact and only the linkage or spring failed, we can often rebuild the mechanism for less than the cost of a full replacement. We’ll tell you straight which path makes more sense once we inspect it.
Most HeatShield damper replacements take 60 to 90 minutes from setup to cleanup. If the frame needs rebuilding or we’re also touching up the coating, add about an hour.
We stock the common HeatShield damper sizes and linkage kits on our trucks. If you have a non-standard throat dimension, we’ll order the exact part and return within a week to install it.
