How Alcott Chimney Sweep Was Born

Ruben Castellano started Alcott Chimney Sweep in 2002 because of a phone call he wishes he had never had to make. A homeowner in Los Angeles had paid another company to sweep and inspect her fireplace ahead of her first winter in a new house. The crew showed up late, worked fast, and handed her a bill for a new liner before she had even seen a brush go up the flue. She called around for a second opinion, and Ruben was the one who answered. When he got up on the roof and lowered a camera into the flue, the liner was original and in perfectly serviceable condition. The work she had been told was urgent was not urgent at all. That evening, sitting in his truck outside her house, Ruben made a decision. He would build a company where the camera goes up the flue before anyone asks for a dollar, where the price is on paper before the first tool comes off the truck, and where a homeowner never has to wonder whether the “emergency” they just heard about is real. That call, and what it revealed about how scared and uninformed homeowners were being treated, is the reason Alcott Chimney Sweep exists. From that first truck in Los Angeles, the company has grown into a network of independently owned and operated locations serving homeowners across the country, including Brooklyn, Houston, Queens, Manhattan, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, Fort Worth, Jacksonville, and Austin. Different cities, different crews, same standard.

Ruben Castellano’s Personal Connection to the Chimney Cleaning Trade

Ruben learned the trade the way most people learn to respect fire: by getting close to it and realizing how fast things can go wrong. He spent his first years in home services working alongside a tradesman who had a simple rule about fireplaces: treat every one as if a family is sleeping in the room next to it. That rule stayed with him. Chimney work is not glamorous. It is soot and creosote, roof ladders and awkward angles, the smell of old ash that hangs in your clothes for days. But Ruben found something in it that other trades never gave him: a job where the consequence of doing it right or doing it cheap is measured in what could happen to a family in the middle of the night. Over more than two decades, he has seen what happens when a flue is neglected. Cracked liners. Birds’ nests packed tight against the damper. Glazed creosote that looks like tar and burns like fuel. He has also seen what happens when a homeowner gets honest information: they act on it, they budget for it, and they sleep better. That is the part that still gets him out of bed. He would tell you plainly that if he were not doing this, he would be teaching it, because the trade needs more people who see chimney work as a responsibility rather than a transaction. But for now, the teaching happens one inspection at a time, with a camera and a written report and an explanation a homeowner can actually understand.

Meet Ruben Castellano – The Person Behind Every Job

Ruben Castellano is the Owner & Founder of Alcott Chimney Sweep. He came up in the service trades the long way, working his way through every part of a chimney job before he ever thought about running the company. His background is hands-on: flue inspection, liner work, masonry repair, cap and damper installation. He is the kind of person who wants to see the problem for himself before he explains it to anyone else. That instinct is built into how Alcott operates. Every job is built around camera inspection and a written price before work begins, because Ruben has never believed in asking a homeowner to trust a diagnosis they cannot see with their own eyes. He lives in Los Angeles and still takes calls from homeowners who just want to talk through whether a repair can wait. What gets him up in the morning is simple: a homeowner who knows what is happening in their own chimney, and who never has to wonder if they are being sold something they do not need.

Our Promise to Homeowners

The Threshold Standard is the set of rules every Alcott Chimney Sweep location operates by, and it is not a marketing phrase. It means every technician is background-checked and identity-verified before they ever put on the uniform. It means you receive the name and photo of the technician before the visit, and that the person at your door shows a photo ID badge every single time. It means a clean, marked uniform, not a stranger in street clothes. And it means the price is put in writing before any work starts. That last part is the one Ruben cares about most, because it goes back to the reason the company exists. A homeowner should never find out what a job costs after it is already done. You should know the number, see the evidence behind the recommendation, and decide for yourself. Every job is covered by Threshold Verified, which means if anyone shows up to your home who you were not told to expect, that visit is on us and we make it right. That is the promise, and it applies at every location.

Our Credentials

  • State-licensed: Every pro working under the Alcott Chimney Sweep name is required to hold the license their state requires. We do not cut corners on this, and we encourage homeowners to ask to see it.
  • Insured & bonded: Every location is required to carry insurance and bonding. This protects you, your home, and the technician working in it.
  • Background-checked and identity-verified: Every technician passes a background check before working under our name. You receive their name and photo before the visit.
  • Photo ID badge at the door: The person at your door should match the photo you were sent. Every time.
  • Written price before work starts: No surprises. You approve the number before anything begins.

Why does any of this matter when you are hiring a chimney sweep? Because you are opening your door to a stranger and asking them to work in your home, often while you are home alone or with kids or aging parents. Licensing and insurance mean the person climbing onto your roof is accountable. Background checks and photo badges mean you know who is coming before they arrive. A written price means you are making an informed decision, not reacting to pressure. Alcott Chimney Sweep is part of the Threshold Group family, and every independent location agrees to these standards before it ever runs a single job.

Rooted in the Communities We Serve

Threshold Group does not pretend to be from every town, and neither does Alcott Chimney Sweep. The company was founded in Los Angeles, and that is where its roots run deepest. But the locations serving Brooklyn, Houston, Queens, Manhattan, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, Fort Worth, Jacksonville, and Austin are not franchises stamped out from a corporate template. Each one is an independent local business that agreed to work to the Threshold Verified standard. They work in these communities because they live in them. They know the housing stock, the weather, and what a winter of fires does to a flue in their region. When you call, a live coordinator connects you with the local team that covers your address. You get the national standard and the local crew, together.
