Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

A Copperfield chimney cap installation in Los Angeles typically runs $385 – $720 installed, depending on the cap model, flue size, and roof access. We stock Copperfield-compatible caps and mounting hardware on our trucks, so most Copperfield cap replacements are done in a single visit. The way most owners discover the cap has failed is simple: they see rust stains bleeding down the chimney chase, or they spot the cap tilted sideways from the ground after a Santa Ana wind event, or a bird gets into the house through a firebox that suddenly seems louder than it used to be.

This page covers what we’ve learned replacing Copperfield caps across Los Angeles, from Century City condos to Van Nuys ranch houses. If you’re holding a loose cap in your hand or staring at one through binoculars that doesn’t look right, you’ll know exactly what you’re dealing with by the time you finish reading.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield makes caps for both masonry chimneys and factory-built metal flues, and the installation approach is completely different between the two. Their masonry cap line includes single-flue and multi-flue models in stainless steel and copper, sized to the outside dimensions of your flue tile. Their factory-built line, commonly matched to chimneys from Majestic, Heatilator, and Superior, uses a slip-in or twist-lock base that pushes into the metal flue pipe. Get this wrong and you’ll buy a cap that sits beautifully on the ground while your flue stays open to the weather.

The fastest way to identify what you need is to look at the manufacturer tag on the chimney pipe itself, usually visible in the attic or just above the firebox. Copperfield’s newer caps have the model number stamped on the underside of the lid. If the stamp is gone, measure the flue tile’s outside width and length for a masonry cap, or the inside diameter of a round metal flue. We carry the common Copperfield sizes on the truck: 8×8, 8×13, 13×13, and 13×18 for masonry, and 6″, 7″, and 8″ round for factory-built. Anything unusual we order direct from a Copperfield distributor and have it in a few days.

One compatibility gotcha we see in Los Angeles often: many 1950s and 1960s-era masonry flues are a half-inch off from modern nominal sizes. A cap listed as 13×13 may not seat on a flue tile that’s actually 12 5/8 × 12 5/8. That’s why we measure on-site rather than trusting the original spec sheet, and shim or trim the base as needed. Alcott Chimney Sweep is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Copperfield, but we install their caps daily because the fit and hardware quality are consistent.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust streaks down the chimney chase or flue tile. The cap’s mesh or lid has corroded through, usually around the spot-welds where the screen meets the hood. In Los Angeles, the salt air within five miles of the coast accelerates this on standard stainless; marine-grade 316 stainless holds up far longer.
  • Cap sits tilted or completely detached after high wind. The mounting brackets or tension screws gave way. Copperfield’s masonry caps anchor to the flue tile with side bolts, and if the tile itself is spalled from decades of moisture, there’s nothing solid for the bolts to bite into.
  • You hear birds or see nesting material in the firebox. The spark arrestor mesh has a tear or separation at the seam. Once a bird gets in, they’ll line the flue with twigs and grass, which becomes a fire hazard the first time you light a fire.
  • Water dripping into the firebox during rain. The cap’s hood is intact but the mounting gap was never sealed, or the seal has shrunk and cracked. This often gets blamed on the cap itself when the real issue is installation, and it’s why we re-seal every cap with high-temperature silicone as part of the job.
  • Smoke backs up into the room more than it used to. A cap that’s shifted can partially block the flue opening, or a cap that was undersized from the start creates too much draft restriction. Copperfield caps have a minimum net free area requirement relative to flue diameter, and a cap that’s too small acts like a partially closed damper.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A complete Copperfield chimney cap installation in Los Angeles runs $385 – $720 installed. The spread comes down to three things: cap size and material, roof height and pitch, and whether the existing mounting surface is sound. A stainless steel cap for a standard single flue is the low end. A larger copper cap for a 13×18 flue, installed on a steep two-story roof with a safety harness and a second technician, lands at the top. If your flue tile is crumbling, that repair is quoted separately and only after we show you the damage on camera.

Every quote we give is a written price before any work starts, and it includes the cap, mounting hardware, high-temperature sealant, and removal of the old cap. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the installation fails within a year, we return and make it right at no charge. No line items appear later, no “we found something while we were up there.” You know the number before our technician puts a ladder on the house.

DIY or Call Us?

Replacing a Copperfield cap means being on the roof, working at the edge, with both hands occupied. For a single-story house with a low-pitch roof and a masonry chimney you can reach without a tall ladder, a confident homeowner with the right tools can manage it, and we’ll tell you if that’s your situation when you call. But most Los Angeles chimneys are on a second story, accessed from a roof pitch that turns a simple bracket bolt into a balance problem. One slip changes the math on the whole project.

There’s also the matter of the flue tile itself. Caps fail because the tile underneath them spalls, shifts, or never fit the cap correctly in the first place. If you install a new Co Copperfield cap on a crumbled tile, you’ve spent the money twice. A technician on the roof can tell you in two minutes whether the tile will hold a cap or needs repair first, and we show you that on camera before recommending anything. If you’d rather we take a look, call (336) 863-3889 and we’ll schedule a visit. Tell me what you’re seeing and I’ll tell you what it actually means.
