Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Franchise FAQ
Alcott Chimney Sweep has spent more than two decades learning what homeowners actually want when they open the door to a chimney company. This page answers the real questions people ask us about owning a location, without the usual franchise fog. If we don’t cover something here, call us.
Common Questions
Do I need chimney experience to open an Alcott location?
No. We train owners and their technicians on the technical side, and many of our most successful operators came from completely different fields. What you do need is comfort leading a small team, talking to homeowners, and following a clear system. The chimney knowledge is teachable. The discipline to send a tech’s name and photo before every visit, put every price in writing, and answer the phone when it rings is what separates a good location from a struggling one.
What’s the total investment range?
Plan on a total investment that covers equipment, a work vehicle, initial inventory, training, insurance, and working capital for your first months. Most prospective owners should expect a range in the low six figures to get a location fully open and operating. We’ll walk you through the specific costs line by line during the discovery process so you’re not guessing. The written-price habit we require for customers applies to you too, starting with your first conversation with our team.
Is financing available?
We don’t provide direct financing, but we can point you toward SBA-backed lending options and other small-business loan programs that many of our owners have used. Your personal financial picture, credit history, and available liquid capital will determine what you qualify for. We’re happy to discuss what has worked for others in the Threshold Group family, and we’ll be straight with you if your numbers don’t yet support the move.
Do I get an exclusive territory?
Yes, you’ll operate within a defined territory that gives you room to build a real local business without competing against other Alcott locations. We set territory boundaries based on population, drive times, and realistic service demand for chimney sweeping, inspection, and gas fireplace repair. The goal is a territory you can actually dominate, not a sprawling map that stretches you too thin to build the reputation that keeps homeowners calling.
How long does training take?
Expect several weeks of initial training covering the technical work, the Threshold Standard operating procedures, hiring and background-checking technicians, pricing, and customer communication. Training continues after you open, with ongoing support on everything from chimney codes to how to handle an inspection that turns up a cracked flue tile. The learning never really stops in this trade, and neither does our involvement.
What ongoing fees or royalties should I expect?
Like most franchise systems, you’ll pay a royalty based on revenue, and there are brand fund or marketing contributions that support the shared systems and materials. We’ll give you the exact percentages early in the discovery process, in writing. There are no surprise fees waiting in the fine print. The ongoing fees fund the things that make the brand work: vetting standards, training updates, and the operational support that keeps every location aligned with the 365-Day Done Right Promise.
How long does it take from signing to opening my doors?
Most owners open within three to six months of signing their agreement, depending on how quickly you complete training, secure a vehicle and equipment, and get your local licensing and insurance in place. Some open faster; some take longer if they’re finishing another career or managing a move. We’ll map the timeline with you early so you know exactly what has to happen and in what order.
What support do I get after I open?
Ongoing support includes technical training updates, help with pricing on complex jobs like liner replacements, access to the trade brands we specify (DuraFlex, HeatShield, Gelco, Olympia Chimney, Famco, and Copperfield), and operational guidance on everything from scheduling to handling a customer who calls about smoke at 11 p.m. You’re an independent owner, but you’re never flailing alone. The Threshold Group name means something because every location works to the same standard.
What kind of person does well as an Alcott owner?
The owners who thrive are the ones who understand that this business is built on homeowner trust. They’re comfortable repeating the same promise a thousand times: background-checked technician, name and photo sent ahead, price in writing before work starts. They don’t cut corners on vetting, they don’t improvise with box-store materials, and they answer the phone. If that sounds like discipline more than glamour, you’re probably the right fit.
What’s the next step if I’m interested?
Call (336) 863-3889 and ask for the franchise team. We’ll ask about your background, your goals, and your financial picture, then send you the details you need to make an informed decision. No high-pressure pitch, no rush. We’d rather you take the time to decide whether this is right than sell you something you’ll regret in six months.
